Terep Forever: an off-road driving game
Climb real mountains
The Stelvio with its 48 hairpins, Pikes Peak, the Passo Giau's 29 numbered tornanti, the Passo Nigra, Dobogókő: real mountain roads at true scale, built from real elevation and road data. Then race, sprint, drag and wreck each other in an arena, in cars that bend, dent and break, alone or with three friends on one screen.

What it is
Up the pass, against the clock
Terep Forever is a functional re-creation of Terep 2, the 1996 Hungarian game: not a bit-by-bit copy, it just feels the same. Its mountains are real: nine hill climbs follow real roads at true scale, every hairpin where it is, against the clock and the ghost of your best climb. Its cars are built from particles and springs, so a bad landing dents the roof, a wall folds the bonnet, and the car keeps every mark to the end of the run.
Diverse low-polygon terrain to drive on. Pixelated cars to roam around with freely. Surprisingly realistic physics and fun crashes in a DOS game demo. Back in the late 1990s? Being played on almost all school computers in Hungary? Yeah, that is one hobby developer's dream known as Terep2, and it is a small but substantial cult classic.
Real mountain roads at true scale
The Stelvio Pass and its 48 hairpins, Pikes Peak, the Passo Giau's 29 numbered tornanti, the Passo Nigra, the Gavia, the Mátra and Dobogókő, built from real elevation and road data, galleries and tunnels included.
Cars that remember every dent
Soft bodies that bend, dent and break; the damage stays with you for the whole drive.
Rivals with characters of their own
Computer drivers on fifteen circuits, each with a character of its own, from the careful to the pushy; catch-up keeps the field together.
Co-op on one screen
Up to four players on a split screen: flag hunt, orienteering, convoy and car ball, or any race together.
Pad, touch or the Siri Remote
Any gamepad, on-screen controls on a phone or tablet, the Siri Remote on Apple TV, and the keyboard at a desk.
Game modes
Thirteen ways to drive
The cards of the game's mode carousel. Every mode has maps made for it.

Free roam
Anywhere on the game's own world or on any of the 95 community tracks.

Hill climb
Up the Stelvio, Pikes Peak, the Gavia, the Giau and more, at true scale, against the clock and a ghost.

Race
Laps against computer drivers on fifteen circuits: a race, a knockout or a cup, with road traffic.

Sprint
Start to finish through five timed checkpoints, through a city or across the country, alone or as a series.

Drag
Four abreast down a night city's strip: six gears by hand, a shift light, nitrous, a best-of-three knockout.

Time trial
Eight minutes on a circuit alone, against the ghost of your best lap.

Rumble
Three minutes in a walled derby arena: every knock dents the cars for good and scores the points.

King of the hill
A crown on a summit: hold the ring around it alone for 30 seconds to win.
SoonDrift
Sliding sideways for points on walled night city courses, against rivals who drift them too.
Co-opFlag hunt
Twelve flags over the open ground, collected together against the team's clock.
Co-opOrienteering
Six hidden controls, a compass and the distance to go; no arrow.
Co-opConvoy
Everyone through every checkpoint of a route; the time spent spread out is added to the team's.
Co-opCar ball
Push a grey wreck into the goal, as many times as four minutes allow.
Flag hunt, orienteering, convoy and car ball are co-op games on a split screen: halves for two, quadrants for four.
Vanilla '96
The original's handling, its 4:3 picture and five cars, on a CRT in a school computer room around 2001.
